A WORD TO PROSPECTIVE PLAY CENTRE OWNERS…

If you’re thinking of opening your own children’s play centre, we hope the following is of interest to you.

Having met Dave and Gareth Lymer in the early stages of the planning and design of Parents Paradise play frame, we have continued to have a close working relationship with them, and when in 2009, Gareth launched Share & Compare Play, we seemed to be an obvious business partner.

Share & Compare Play was established to offer guidance and advice to those setting up an indoor play centre within the soft play industry.  The mechanism to do this was in the form of a website – www.shareandcompareplay.com – and by offering workshops for prospective new play centre operators to attend. Gareth was looking for a flagship business to host these events (one in the south and one in the north of the UK) and Parents Paradise became its southern host.

The key point of this relationship was to exchange information for free via the website, without compromising or conflicting business interests.  As an operator, we were encouraged to recommend soft play suppliers to feature on the site and review their business, therefore offering new play centres some guidance on how to start the set up with quality play suppliers.

When it came to the play centre seminars, Wendy and I were happy to share our experience and knowledge along with some of the play suppliers featured on the site.  If these prospective new play centre operators then actually proceeded with their dream, we offered a bespoke consultancy service.

You are probably wondering why we would want to spend our time helping other play centres become successful.  Quite simply, had this been offered to us in 2004, it would have saved many hours of research and dead-ends.  Our relationship with Share & Compare is pioneering and helping the play area industry to evolve to be more transparent, with open communication, setting a benchmark for new play centre operators.  We want to change the perception of the children’s play industry, not only for potential new soft play operators, but carrying this through to our customer experience.  We believe good service, good facilities and good quality produce should be part of this business culture and a reasonable expectation.

A word of caution.  Setting up a soft play centre, as with any other new business set up, is not for the faint hearted!  Have no doubt that, however easy this may look from the outside, when it comes to setting up your own business, your own children’s play centre, it will completely consume you.  You will be working 18 hours a day, every day, probably for up to 18 months.  You will be challenged every day.  You will be permanently exhausted.  But you will quickly build up a team of people you trust around you, and gain the benefits of running your own play centre.
