WENDY ATTWOOD

Having left Lyndale School (St Albans) with a reasonable set of grades, I started at college in 1988, only to lose my Mum, very suddenly, a year later. Needless to say, my studies suffered and I decided I just wanted to get a job!  I wrote to 50 local companies and included a not-so-brilliant CV, but I did mention I had been a sales person since the day I was born!!  Consequently, my career started as a Telesales Executive at a local newspaper.  Within 2 years I had been promoted to Sales Representative, and I later moved into recruitment.  By 1996, I was Branch Manager, by 1997 I was married and by 2002, I had 2 children!

I thoroughly enjoyed my time as a full-time Mum at home, but 4 years on, I was ready for a new challenge.  And I realised I wanted to help people like me, parents like me…I had found indoor soft play centres to be absolute life savers with my children, and I really believed I could do it better!  I believed I could take all the good points from the centres I had visited and create something special, an exciting facility that would give children great memories!

I never thought to set up Parents Paradise because I’m good with children.  I never wanted to set up Parents Paradise because it looked easy.  I never wanted to set up Parents Paradise because I was bored.  I wanted to do it for one reason and one reason only – because I really felt I could make a difference and I knew I could make it work.  As long as people carried on having children, there would always be a need.

My sister, Lyn, and I, decided to make this a joint venture, and we spent 3 years talking, planning, investigating and making it happen!  We want Parents Paradise to be known as the soft play facility, not owned by some big company, but family run.  For families.  Families like ours.

LYN PRESENCE

After leaving Lyndale School, I took my A levels at St Albans Girls School.  Losing Mum in 1990 when I was 20 and Wendy was 17 years old was pretty tough on both of us, not to mention the fact that we then had to take over running a home.  After a few not-so-interesting jobs and some time spent traveling, I settled down into a career at Polaroid UK (based in St Albans).  Having married and had my daughter Gabrielle at 27, I left my role as a Key Accounts Manager to be a full time Mum.  I also spent much of my time visiting and caring for both my grandmothers (along with Wendy) until the end, which was another very difficult time for all of us.

I too had spent lots of time in soft play centres and, frankly, thought I could do a better job!  So, with the help of the inheritance left to us, we decided to set up our own play centre.  The most important element of the business for me personally, was the Café, as I had experienced some truly dreadful coffee, in particular in other playcentres, and I was keen to get this right.  And hopefully we have!

Since opening PP in 2007, I feel I have overcome more challenges than I have ever faced before and I’m sure Wendy and Rachael would say the same!  We have had to turn our hands to anything and everything, from ‘rodding’ the drains on a busy day when the toilets get blocked up, to fixing the coffee machine…we’ve done it all!

Every day brings a new challenge and that is what I love.

SUE

I started my catering career with Hertfordshire Catering, and in 2001, I worked for a school that opted out the school meal system and operated independently. This was a huge achievement, not only personally but for the school overall, because it worked! I was able to run a breakfast club, cake sales as well as daily school lunches and we raised funds to source all the fresh products used, locally. We created our own menus, offering well-balanced nutrition for children, which was OFSTED approved.

In 2007, I was approached by Wendy (who I knew personally through a mutual friend) and Lyn to take on the task of running Parents Paradise kitchen. I run the kitchen with strict discipline and approach to health, safety and cleanliness and hygiene. The team’s hard work was awarded in 2011 with a 5 star Hertsmere County Council sign-off for the Paradise Café, and I am very proud of this achievement. I am constantly searching for new ideas for the menu, and work hard to bring a broad selection of food to Parents Paradise customers, that’s competitively priced and the best possible quality.

LAURA

Having previously worked as a nanny and as a Nursery Nurse in a private day nursery, I came to Parents Paradise in December 2009 with considerable child care experience. This background gave me some important skills coming into this business, including organisational abilities, facilities experience and an understanding of what it takes to meet the needs of young children. Equally, Parents Paradise has presented me with a significant learning curve and challenges, including the scale of operations in a warehouse of 11,000 square feet, a much larger customer base than I had ever experienced before, sometimes exceeding 800 people in a day, and meeting the many, varied and diverse requirements of all of those customers.

By far the greatest challenge, however, has been learning how to communicate, motivate and delegate to a team of staff, which I had never done before working at Parents Paradise.

Our customers are always telling us how clean the centre is, and the Parents Paradise team work very hard to keep it that way. That’s my motivation every day: keeping the play centre clean for our customers; ensuring our customer’s are receiving good service from the team; maintaining all of the facilities so that the centre stays safe for everyone.

I do hope you enjoy your next visit!

KERI DAWES

My past career has been pretty varied! I have been a hairdresser, waitress, office and a financial administrator and have even worked for Sir Alan Sugar! I joined the PP team in May 2008 working in the café at weekends but within 6 months I was up in the office getting stuck into taking party bookings. I am now the administrator for our education centre Play and Learn which brings new challenges. I find I am enjoying interacting with other parents who, like me, want to give their child the best support to complement their schooling and to improve their child’s confidence with maths and English.

I live in St Albans with my 6-year-old daughter Jessica, as you can imagine my home life is pretty busy! Jessica also attends maths lessons here at PP and often wants to stay afterwards and help the staff with their end of day cleaning jobs, I just wish she was that keen at home!
